Cibiru Roundabout Is No Longer Effective, Yana Wants the Underpass to be Accelerated

The Bandung City Government (Pemkot) is again serious about the construction of the underpass as a replacement for the Cibiru roundabout because the congestion level has become increasingly chaotic.

The congestion level in Cibiru Bandung has become more uncontrollable. Looking at this condition, the Bandung City Government once again focuses on the underpass construction as an alternative to the Cibiru Roundabout.

As a result, the Head of the Transportation Agency of West Java Province, Koswara Hanafi, said that the construction would start in 2023. They had discussed with the Bandung City Government as to the realization of this underpass project.

“The underpass has been submitted into the development plan 2023. Its Detailed Engineering Design (DED) has been created by the Bandung City Government, so its construction will be subsidized by the Provincial Government,” said Koswara on Wednesday, 23 March 2022.

Koswara also believed that traffic congestion in Cibiru could no longer be addressed with the roundabout scheme. So, it needs to be addressed through the underpass.

“With the current traffic volumes, the roundabout is not effective, so the underpass needs to be constructed. Roundabouts are effective if the traffic volumes are still suitable for merging (of the traffic route),” he emphasized.

Furthermore, Koswara added that it required a traffic engineering management strategy during the construction of the underpass.

“The traffic management will certainly change. It requires further discussions with other teams,” Koswara said.

The approval for the underpass construction from the Provincial Government is good news for the Bandung City Government.

The Acting Mayor of Bandung City, Yana Mulyana, said that the construction plan for this project was hindered with its big budget.

“Its budget is indeed big, exceeding Rp200 billion. The Bandung City Government alone cannot cover it. So, we need support from the Provincial Government,” Yana said.

Yana also hoped that the underpass construction could support the traffic acceleration programs in Bandung City like Bus Rapid Transit (BTR) and Light Rail Transit (LRT) started in 2022.

“I hope it would be our efforts to provide transport service and better traffic for the public,” he said.

In the DED, the underpass is planned to have the length of 910 meter in total, with a tunnel of 118 meter, an overt area on the left of 58 meter and 466 meter on the right. (din)*
