With students from the Architecture major of Indonesia University of Education (UPI), the Bandung City government will optimize small areas in two wards: Sukamiskin and Gumuruh.

With interesting ideas from these candidate architects, small lands in the two wards will be ‘magically’ turned into public spaces friendly to the environment and the disabled, and more meaningful.

The collaboration was warmly welcomed by the Acting Mayor of Bandung City, Yana Mulyana, after the discussion with UPI on Wednesday, 13 April 2022.

“The Bandung City Government is open to public participations because we cannot develop this city alone, (it) must involve participations from various parties,” Yana said.

Even so, Yana highlighted the need to ensure the lands’ ownership.

“We will survey the locations together, including to the respective agencies. We will also look at the concept whether or not it can be perfected based on the standards, one of them is being friendly to the disabled,” he said.

As a response, the supervisor of the UPI’s student from RLA Studio, Gusti Yan Iwako, stated that, in carrying out the program, the students were not only expected to learn architecture, but also learn social aspects in public, bureaucracy, etc.

“During the supervision, we did not use conventional business approach, but spirit in collaborations. One of them is by taking into account environment-friendly materials,” Gusti said.

The college students are divided into two groups. The first one will be responsible for the architect program in Sukamiskin Ward. The other one will be responsible in Gumuruh.

The representative of the first group, Faisal, emphasized his group’s plan with the theme stating ‘Sukamiskin Bangkit Pandemi’ that simply translates to Sukamiskin Recovers from the Pandemic.

“Our group will recommend the activation of urban farming area, integrating waste management, and Aren Eco Urban Park that will be planned to be constructed in Arcamanik Indah housing areas,” Faisal said.

On the other hand, Aulia, a representative of group 2, stated that their group’s idea was to activate green public area (RTH) in Gumuruh.

“The potential we find in the area is the people are concerned with RTH, but it is yet to be maximum in terms of its use,” Aulia believed.

Additionally, she believed that the RTH in the housing area was quite deserted even though the land was spacious.

“The development and activation targets are: East Salendro Park, Siwal Park, and Ipal Park. The plan is that these three parks will be activated into integrated parks connected with bicycle lines,” she said. (din)**
